Over the past months one of our reading group members, Dan Yema, has participated in a number of thought-provoking events that stress the importance of labour relations, health advocacy, and mental well-being. These events not only reflect Dan’s expertise in psychology but also represent cross-border themes of inclusiveness, partnership, and community care.
At the 5th anniversary celebration of Social Justice for Migrant Workers last June, Dan was invited as a guest speaker to share his insights on overcoming barriers and fostering better relationships between employees and employers. His reflections drew from real-world challenges faced by migrant workers, particularly in Hong Kong, and emphasized the need for empathy and understanding in addressing workplace dynamics.

“Dan was invited as guest speaker at the 5th anniversary of the Social Justice for Migrant Workers last June 30, 2024. He talked about overcoming barriers and building better relationships between employee and employer.”
In November, Dan facilitated a visit by Dr. Erasmus Morah, Director of the UNAIDS China Office, to the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation. He presented the critical role of partnerships—both global and local—in the fight against HIV/AIDS and moderated an engaging session with volunteers and students. This dialogue reinforced the power of collaboration in tackling health challenges and underscored the importance of education and community engagement in prevention efforts.

“Last November 15, 2024, Dan was invited to facilitate the visit of Dr. Erasmus Morah, Director of the UNAIDS China Office, to the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation (HKAF).”
Dan’s advocacy extended further into mental health awareness when he spoke at an event organized by AIA later that month. Addressing a diverse audience of local and non-local participants, he emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for open conversations about mental health, offering practical advice on fostering well-being in everyday life.

“Dan was recently invited to talk about mental health awareness last November 20, 2024. The event was organized by AIA and was attended by local and non-local participants.”
As these events collectively highlight the intersections of psychology, advocacy, and community, they offer perspectives that are not only timely but also universal. Whether discussing labor rights, sexual health education, or mental well-being, the common thread in these conversations is the call for greater empathy, inclusivity, and action.
As we reflect on these themes, we are reminded of the importance of bringing together knowledge from all professions and experiences to address pressing concerns in our societies today.
